I wasn’t planning on doing Valentine crafts for the blog because a. I am not a V-day fan and b. my daughter is only 1, so what can she do? Well according to pinterest there are LOTS of things she can do. With a little inspiration from pinterest, my fellow blogger Crafts by Courtney and a trip to the dollar store I was able to come up with this cute toddler painted valentine heart craft.
Materials:
- Canvas (Below “canvas prints” from dollar store. Shoe box lid works too)
- Glue or Mod Podge
- Paint Brush
- Craft Paper (I am still using the floral paper book I bought for Scarlett’s Bday Banner Post and my DIY Pinwheel Post. This book lasts forever, best 12$ spent)
- Paint
- ** Tissue optional
First you need to do a little prep work. Unless your kids are old enough to do this part themselves.
1. Modpodge or glue on craft paper to your canvas.
2. Cut corners of the craft paper. Fold and glue down the craft paper to the sides.
3. Make the Hearts (your kids will be painting these). I made 3 different options…. white paper hearts, floral craft paper hearts and tissue paper hearts.
I got the tissue heart idea (which was my initial inspiration for this project) from a great kids valentine craft tutorial Make A Tissue Heart Wreath from Crafts By Courtney
4. Paint the HEARTS!
So now that we were all prepped and ready it was time to have our crafting play date. Sounds super fun, right? Yeah, sounds being the operative word lol. Scarlett was in a MOOD which is never good for play dates. Ok, ok it wasn’t that bad it was actually pretty fun… just got a little hectic as is expected with four little girls under the age of two. So this is how it went…
I taped down the hearts to the brown paper (1$ a roll at dollar store) so that the girls could not take off with the hearts. They LOVED when I would squirt the paint out so we used a ton of paint, thank goodness it is .69 cents at Michaels! I have lots!
What is a painting party without walking on your artwork? Both Ellie and Scarlett did this multiple times. Unfortunately I made the rookie mistake of leaving Scarlett’s shoes on. Oops. They are still painted.
FINALLY Scarlett, my little lone wanderer, decided to join in the fun (for only a few minutes).
Then we have cute little Mikaela finger painting a different project for her two Grandmas. It is an adorable idea I will post on my blog once my friend LeeAnn finishes it.
5. Glue on the HEARTS - Sorry I did not get a picture of this step, things were a little too hectic. The girls were ready for naps and us moms were trying to get paint off of our clothes. Just pull the hearts from the brown paper and glue them onto the canvases. Done!
I took one more step and added a little chalkboard label to each of them. Scroll down if you want to download my chalkboard printable. I think it adds a really special detail to these valentines especially if you are giving these as gifts.
Taking this picture was like herding cats, I am glad I am behind the lens and my friends had to do the herding! I was CRACKING UP from behind the camera.
My Scarlett (in the tie die) was the worst, she was running off the minute she is put down, Dena’s two are clinging to her for dear life and Mikaela is trying so hard to hold her own with this crew and stay standing. O.M.G.
We got home and Scarlett was asleep with paint all over her face, her hair, her clothes and my new jeans! Was the project worth it? Of course! Here is the finished product. Download the Chalkboard Labels HERE. You will have to fill in the names and year by hand but it is still cute!

The little ones are really into their work aren’t they? what a bunch of cuties! And great artists too!
Love those pictures!! Those are some adorable kiddos (and canvases)! So jealous you can go outside to do this (have I mentioned that before???)!
It is actually too hot here Katie! I want a winter. I guess grass is always greener.
So, so cute! What a gorgeous group of little ladies! This is an adorable project
Thanks so much Angela!
Aww I LOVE this!! You did a great job and such a creative take on it!! I can’t believe you got those canvases from the Dollar Tree!! I guess I’ll have to make a trip over there tomorrow and grab some.
And you know me I love a craft project at a play date. These girls are so adorable and they look like they had a lot of fun with their craft projects!
Haha Courtney, it was fun until the end when we hit meltdown nap zone! Apparently none if my friends could find those canvases at their dollar store. We must be lucky here in San Diego! Good luck
Those pictures are priceless! What a fun play date idea. I might have to round up my girlfriends and do something similar! My daughter is 19 months and I think she would really enjoy this. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks Chelsea, I bet she would love it! So cool that all of us are in San Diego. Maybe we can go to one of the conferences this year! Have a good weekend.
These are seriously adorable. The girls did such a good job and I love the labels you put on the finished products. I know what you mean about things “sounding” like a great idea. I once took my boys (they were 5 and 3) to a pottery painting store. My youngest didn’t want to participate very much and threw many fits. My oldest fought me when I said 10 coats was enough on the piggy bank he was painting. Then he accidentally knocked it to the floor. The girl behind the counter didn’t take pity on me though, so I still had to pay for it. Thanks for linking this up to the Thursday S.T.Y.L.E. Link Party! We hope to see you back tonight!

Hi Sonnet - Oh my goodness, this is so precious! My favorite picture is the one with the pacifier in her mouth holding the paint - a future DIY blogger!!! Thank you for linking up at the Peace, Love, and Chocolate party and for supporting such a great cause. Hugs, Holly
