St. Patrick’s day is almost here and in the spirit of the holiday I wanted to share a little bit of my Irish life with you! My husband is from County Antrim, Northern Ireland and he has the Irish slang that comes with it. There are many times in a day when I cannot think of the AMERICAN word for something because all day long I hear the Irish version. I have a tendency to say footpath instead of sidewalk, trolley instead of cart, pram instead of stroller and dummy instead of pacifier…. usually when I don’t have coffee.
On my last trip to Ireland I wrote down funny random sayings and words as I heard them into a little address book. I found this book when I was cleaning out my garage recently and figured I might as well share. So here they are….. REAL Irish Sayings from the wife of an Irishman.
Things Chris says to me when he is annoyed - You are frying my head, Your doing my head in, Your wreckin my head (lol… yes I drive my husband nuts, it is my specialty). Wise Up, Cop on, Come off it. What are you on about?
The many ways to say DRUNK- Plastered, Airlocked, Stocious, Blocked, Coming sideways, coming with a load on, The Rip, Lash, Buckled,
Sayings- Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, Sandwich short of a picnic, Tight as ducks, Bum is a Plum
Here are some words…..
- Sound- Reliable
- Aye- yes
- Dead on- That’s good
- Grand- fine, ok

These are hilarious! My good friend married an Irishman two years ago, and the wedding was out of control! Lots of these sayings, lots of ‘airlocked’ people, but overall a good craic (not sure if I used those quite right, but I’m still laughing)!! Fun post to read! Hope you guys are having a festive weekend!!

Love this post. Found you through the Wednesday Whatsits party hop. I have family and friends in Ireland so I have heard more than my fair share of slang. My favorite one has to be bollocks! And if I remember correctly their white sauce concoction is milk, butter and flour.
