I finally did it. After years of hoarding, moving, crafting, and more recently blogging... I decided to build a craft space. I saw so many amazing projects the first few weeks in January, it seemed like everyone was getting organized except for me. I initially just looked with envy not entertaining the idea of organizing my crafts because a) I have no craft room to put everything and b) I have no money to spend on a system. Just so you understand what I am working with… here is an example of one of my craft storage bins. Yes.. I still keep stuff in here.
Then it happened. I had that hair pulling moment, when you run around the house looking for something you know you have but can’t find anywhere. I hate that! I had friends coming over for craft day and no glue sticks. I ran all over the house and was totally frantic, I spent an hour looking for them and finally found the bag in a random junk drawer in the kitchen right before my friends showed up. No makeup, no hair done… damn glue stick. That was it, I told my husband that night… I am getting organized! So I started pulling out all my stuff to take inventory
After wandering around our house opening closets and cupboards hunting for a space to put all of my crafts I decided I would stop being lazy and build a space in the GARAGE.
Below is a picture of our garage. I wanted the BIG space where the ladders are hanging are but my husband did not want to move his precious ladders and did not want me taking over the “main” garage space so I ended up with the tiny wall in the laundry area. No problem, challenge accepted.
Below is a picture of the space I ended up with. Yes.. that little wall where the ironing board is.
First step was to hit up Ikea. Shelf 14.99 and Ikea Storage bins $1.77 - $3.44
Then I went to Home Depot and got some peg board. $4 a sheet, I got 3 sheets. I painted them grey of course. I love grey.
I tried to put up the peg board myself but apparently you cannot just screw it into the wall. After proudly showing my husband my work he shook his head, rolled his eyes and jumped in to re-do the job. He put some wood boards at bottom and top of the boards to create a space between the board and the wall.
Alright so shelf is up, peg board is up and I started hanging things just to get a feel for how much space I have to work with. Next weekend I will organize EVERYTHING properly and will make/hang a sign (She’s So Crafty? She’s Soho Crafty? Soho DIY?) Sohooo excited! Will post pictures next week of the finished product!
