These easy stencil burlap & rosette pillows were so quick and simple to make that I had to share them with you! I made these decorative pillows to spruce up an upcycled crib that I am working on. I really didn’t have much time and had NO money to spend on them so I had to come up with something fast and easy (with a unique twist of course). I went rummaging around my house looking for materials to use for pillows and found the burlap and damask fabric along with the stencil paint that I had bought for project over a year ago, perfect! These pillows are not a exact match to the the crib cushion cover but they are close enough, right?
Another great thing about these pillows is that they are gender neutral, there is a mustache stenciled onto one side and a heart on the other! I want to apologize for the dark pictures I was working on these late at night and the lighting was dim. Ok, here is how I made them….
1) Print out this Mustache & Heart Stencil
2) Fold in half and cut out the middle.
4) Tape down the stencil on top of your fabric.
5) Paint with fabric stencil paint. Since I was using burlap I had to do a few layers.
*The stenciling would have been easier on normal fabric!
6) Cut out the pillow squares to the size that you want. Make sure to cut 1/4-1/2″ larger then your finished pillow size for seam allowance.
7) Put right sides together. In other words - he sides that you want to show when the pillow is finished need to be facing each other. Now sew only around three sides leaving one full side open to insert your insert or stuffing.
I always reinforce my corners and clip them…
8) Now flip your pillow cover right sides out. I inserted an old pillow a friend had given me for free.
9) If this were a pillow I planned on using for a long time I would probably put a zipper in this bottom seam or at least hand stitch it closed so that it is super clean but I promised you FAST, SIMPLE, EASY pillow making and that is what I am giving you.
Fold the bottom edge inward together and sew using a zig zag stitch along the very bottom edge. This pillow is for decoration only, it will not be used so the bottom will be hidden.
As you can see from the below picture the bottom is a little wavy and not perfect but it will do. My upcycled cradle is going on craigslist tomorrow and I just need these pillows for decorative value.
Next up is the rosette Pillow! This one is even easier.
1) Cut out 2 pcs of fabric to the size that you want. *Don’t sew them together yet, sew on the rosettes first.
2) Take two strips of fabric for your rosette. Each strip will be one rosette so if you want more then cut more strips.
3) Next center your main pillow fabric on the sewing machine with the right side up. On top of the fabric you will fold your rosette fabric in half and twist it, then put on the sewing machine to sew onto the fabric as pictured below. You can pin it to stay in place but I don’t, I just hold it there while I sew.
*Tip* You can hide the frayed edge within your twist if you want a clean look (like mine) or you can let the frayed edge show. It is up to you
4) Now just tack down the rosette in random spots. In other words, as you twist your rosette you will move your sewing machine over a little bit to a new spot and sew 7-8 stitches back and forth in that spot. Do this all over your rosette in the cracks and crevices to hide the stitches as much as possible.
5) See the long threads? You will cut these threads off from the top and leave them on the underside.
6) To finish off the rosette simply tuck the end under one of your free edges of rosette, then tack on top of it.
7) Make sure to cut all of your threads from the front side of rosettes but leave the long ones on the underside, they will help keep reinforcement of your stitching.
8) Sew this pillow together the same way I explained above! Just sew 3 sides, flip right sides out, insert your pillow or stuffing and finish off the open edge either by machine or hand.
Stay tuned for my tutorial on this upcycled cradle and easy to cover cushion! Hope everyone is having a great week.

This is the cutest thing! I was planning on doing some kind of stencil and I just happened to buy burlap the other day so I may have to try this pillow! Thanks…and hello from Link it up or lump it party!
Awesome Leelee! I can’t wait to see what you come up with. Hope you post it on your blog.
Ok so I just keep going by these at the Link Party while trying to pick my features. I can’t help it- I have to feature them I just love your little pillows. Just a little trick for next time…cut your design out of freezer paper and iron it right onto the burlap (or other fabric) you get a tight seal for the stencil and NO bleeding! It’s amazing. Then you can lift it right off and you have a really crisp stencil.
PS So happy to have you join us as co-host!
That is SOOO good to know Melissa! I had no idea! Thanks so much I will be using that tip in the future. And thanks for featuring my pillows on link it or lump it today!!
